Highlights: Portugal citizenship application has increased by 1.4 million 

  • A total of 1.4 million foreign nationals have applied for citizenship in Portugal. 
  • The number of applications for citizenship in Portugal has increased by over 366 per cent in six years.
  • In 2023, 230,000 applications were registered, a record number of Portuguese citizenship applications. 
  • The Portuguese government has launched a new platform that is currently processing applications for October 2024.

Increase in Portugal Citizenship 

Over 1.4 requests for Portuguese citizenship have been recorded in the last six years, indicating a 366 percent increase in Portuguese citizens. This also reflects interest in foreigners becoming citizens in Portugal.  
 

Portugal's application processing time increased by 2 years 

Last year, Portugal launched a new platform by the Institute of Registries and Noraties (IRN) for processing citizenship applications. Currently, the platform is processing applications that were submitted as urgent filings in the second half of October, which has extended the application processing time to two years. IRN registered around 230,000 applications for Portuguese citizenship in 2023.
