11,000+ immigrants obtained Austrian citizenship in H1 of 2024

Highlights: Austria offered citizenship to 11,000+ immigrants in the first-half of 2024

  • In 2024, around 11,000+ foreign nationals obtained Austrian citizenship between January and June.
  • Most foreign nationals were from Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • The newly naturalized citizens mainly were from the Nazi regime, including Syrians and Turk nationals.
  • Around 74.7 percent of foreign nationals were naturalized through legal entitlement, 5.5 percent on a discretionary basis, and 19.8 percent on the extension of naturalization.

Citizens who obtained Austrian citizenship

An estimated 11,050 foreign nationals obtained Austrian citizenship between January and June 2024, 66 percent more than the previous year. According to the statistics, 6,658 new Austrian citizens were already residing there, compared to the rest living abroad.

 

Among most of the foreigners that secured Austrian citizenship during this period were descendants of people persecuted during the Nazi regime, as they represented 37 percent of all people that became new holders of the red-white-red passport. The total count of immigrants from different countries who receive citizenship was from:

 

  • Israel- 2,380
  • The United States - 873
  • The United Kingdom – 422

Syrians acquired the most number of Austrian Citizenship in 2024

Around 6,925 nationals who acquired Austrian Citizenship were Syrian citizens in the has first of  2024. A total number of 1,223 Syrians became Austrian citizens during this period, followed by Turks and Afghanis.

 

During this period, 48.6 percent of the naturalized people were women, out of which one-third were under 18 years old. Additionally, one-third of the foreign nationals, that is, 2,267 immigrants, were born in the country.

 

Upper Austria has 1,376 people and is considered home to most newly naturalized citizens during the six months. Styria and Salzburg followed with 855 and 332 people obtaining Citizenship.

 

Total count of new Austrian Citizens

After living in Austria for six months, around 3,244 immigrants were naturalized. That is the only fraction of the 8,256 naturalized immigrants based on legal entitlement.

 

To an estimated count, many individuals got naturalized in different ways, such as:

 

  • 4125 individuals were naturalized after they or their descendants were politically persecuted,
  • 393 individuals gained Citizenship through marriage
  • 261 immigrants were naturalized after more than 15 years of residing in Austria
  • 605 immigrants were naturalized and gained Citizenship on a discretionary basis
  • 2,189 persons approximately obtained Citizenship in the first half of 2024
