Highlights: 30% of Canadian businesses find it challenging to find skilled employees

  • The job vacancies fell by 69,900 to 76,100 in 2023.
  • The payroll employment rose by 117,600 in the third quarter of 2023.
  • The hourly wage increased faster in the third quarter compared with the second quarter.
  • The number of job vacancies declined to 9,300 in trade and transport and equipment operators.

Different job sectors are facing an increase in shortage of skilled workers. The table below demonstrates the job sector vacancies recent condition:

Job vacancies in other sectors:

  • The number of vacancy positions increased in business, finance, and administration occupations, which fell by 8,100 (-9.4%) to 77,500, with three quarterly declines by 105,000 vacancies.
  • In health occupations, the job vacancies changed to 89,400
  • Education, law, social, community, and government services changed to 64,800.
  • Occupations in manufacturing and utilities recorded the most significant drop by 46.9% to 25,900.
  • Natural resources, agriculture, and related production occupations by 35.0% to 15,600.
  • Natural and applied sciences and related occupations by 34.6% to 44,500.
  • Previously, there were fewer job vacancies for educational level. Currently, the job vacancies have risen. The bachelor's degree or higher level fell to 15.2% (-17,700).

Job Vacancies in 26 of 69 economic regions:

The vacancy positions in six provinces changed in the third and fourth quarters. The table below represents the job vacancies:

Out of nine provinces, Saskatchewan job vacancies changed a bit into a positive number. The most significant proportional drop was recorded in Mauricie, Quebec, 30.4% to 3,800.

 

Meanwhile, Manitoba (+23.7% to 2,400) was reported to have vacant positions. Job vacancies declined in 54 economic regions compared to the previous year.

 

Job vacancy rose in four economic regions:  

  • Parklands and North, Manitoba (+1.1 percentage points to 5.7%)
  • Swift Current – Moose Jaw
  • Saskatchewan (+1.1 percentage points to 6.1%)
