70,000 Blue Card Holders in Germany in 2021

German Federal Office of Statistics, Destatis has stated through a report that in 2021, the number of Blue Card holders was 70,000. The report of Destatis also stated in a press release that there is a continued increase of highly qualified professionals with Blue Card holders in Germany.

In 2021, there was an increase of 6 percent of the Blue Card holders. The statement of Destatis reveals that at the end of 2021, Central Register of Foreigners registered 70,000 Blue Card holders, and this number is a new record.

In comparison to the pre-pandemic period, the growth has slowed down. There was an increase of 20 percent of the Blue Card holders in 2019. Destatis revealed that a maximum number of Blue Card holders last year were from India. The report also revealed that out of ten people with a Blue Card, three were highly qualified professionals who studied in German universities.

The report stated that 36,400 holders got standard occupation while the remaining people gone for the shortage occupation. The cities in which the highest number of Blue Card holders resides are:

  • Berlin
  • Munich
  • Frankfurt
  • Dusseldorf

The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has revealed that the salaries for the Blue Card holders have been lowered down. Since January 1, 2022, the drop in the salary was 0.7%. The office also explained that the minimum gross salary was €56,400.
