The sponsor shoulders all financial responsible for their relatives once they arrive to Canada and to be a sponsor, the Canadian citizen or permanent resident must:

  • Sign a sponsorship agreement with the relative to be sponsored to provide financial support, if necessary. This agreement also states that the person getting a permanent residence will support themselves
  • Provide financial support for a spouse, conjugal or common-law partner for three years from the date they become permanent residents, and
  • Financially support a dependent child for 10 years, or until the child turns 25

The relatives who can be sponsored include:

  • Dependent children
  • Grandparents – (Additional conditions apply)
  • Common-law partner – (restrictions apply)

Eligibility for sponsored spouses in Canada

Under Family Sponsorship Programs, the spouses and common-law partners who enter Canada are allowed to work under the Spousal Work Permit Pilot Program and this program is allows the spouses and partners to work during their immigration applications are being processed.

It is a must for the eligible candidates to be in Canada and in the process of being sponsored for permanent residence under the spouse or common-law partner class. These candidates must also have valid temporary status as a worker, student, or visitor.

Canada’s immigration contract

The sponsors sign a contract with Canada’s immigration authorities to recompense the government for any social assistance payments made to the sponsored person, under the sponsorship programs. These sponsors remain indebted to the undertaking agreement for the total period of the contract, despite the change of circumstances such as separation, marital breakdown, divorce, or financial change in circumstances.

If a spouse, conjugal partner or common-law partner or even a sponsor is having to sign an undertaking to repay the provincial or federal governments, from the date of becoming a permanent resident for the period of three years.

Considering a child under the age of 19 years, of the common-law partner, sponsor or spouse, or conjugal partner, the responsibility starts from the day that the child becomes a Canadian permanent resident for a period of 10 years or until the child ages 25 years.

For a dependent child over 19 years, the responsibility begins on the day that the dependent child becomes a permanent resident, for a period of three years.
