What is the Scale-Up Visa by the UK?

  • The scale-up visa of the UK aims to attract highly skilled and academically gifted foreign nationals in to the country.

The United Kingdom has launched a new immigration route recently to attract top talent into the country.

The recently launched Scale Up Visa System plans to boost innovation by enhancing the process for 'Scale Up' businesses to pique the interest of those who are "very highly skilled" and "academically elite" in the UK.

Eligibility Requirements

You are required to have a sponsor to meet the eligibility requirement for the Scale-up visa. Your employer based in the UK should meet certain eligibility criteria to sponsor the scale-up workers. The eligibility requirements for the candidates are:

  • Have a valid job offer to work for a mandated scale-up business for a minimum of six months
  • Have a 'certificate of sponsorship' from your employer based in the UK with detailed information about the job role you have been offered in the UK
  • Have a job offer for a job that is listed in the list of eligible occupations
  • Be paid the minimum salary mandated in the UK in your new job

Application of the Scale-Up Worker Visa

Here's how to go about the process of applying for the Scale-up Worker visa:

  • You are required to apply online for the Scale-Up Worker Visa.
  • Submit the documents required
  • Give the certificate of sponsorship reference number. Your employer will be giving you this
  • Proof of your proficiency in the English language
  • A valid passport or other documents as a proof for your identity and nationality
  • Your job role
  • The annual salary
  • The occupation code of your job
  • The name of your employer and their sponsor license number. It will be given on your certificate of sponsorship

Proficiency in English

You have to prove your proficiency in the English language at the time of applying for your Scale-Up Visa unless you already submitted the proof in your visa application.

The proof of knowledge in English requires:

  • Passing the SELT or Secure English Language Test from an authorized provider
  • Have a GCSE, A level, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, obtained through study at a UK educational institute that you started when you were below 18 years of age
  • Have a degree-level academic qualification where the medium of instruction was in English if you graduated from abroad. You are required to apply through Ecctis or as it was known as UK NARIC for confirming that your qualification is equivalent to a graduate degree, post-graduate degree, or doctoral degree in the UK.

How long is the Scale-Up Visa valid?

With a Scale-up Worker visa, you are permitted to stay in the UK for a maximum of two years. You can also apply to extend your visa when it is about to expire.

You can apply for the extension of your visa as many times as you wish for another three years. You are required to meet the eligibility criteria whenever you apply. After 5 years, you would be able to apply for permanent residency in the UK.

How much will it cost?

You and your dependants coming to the UK on the Scale-up Worker visa will each are required to pay the:

  • 715 Euros for the application fee
  • 624 Euros per year for the healthcare surcharge
  • A minimum of 1,270 Euros to cover your expenses when you come to the UK unless you are exempted from the requirement

When should you apply?

You can apply three months before the day you are about to start your work in the UK.
