IRCC has announced its approval of the PTE or Pearson Test of English for immigration applications for Canada. It will be effective from late 2023.

The PTE, along with IELTS General Training and CELPIP, will be the 3 recognized language tests for candidates in the economic class. The tests help the candidates demonstrate their proficiency in the English language to IRCC or Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.

There are different language criteria for international students to apply for a study permit. PTE Essential is an English language test that was created to fulfill the language proficiency requirements for immigration applicants to Canada by IRCC. It implies that international students are required to take the "Academic" version of the language proficiency test.

The recognition of PTE Essential implies that there are 5 language tests available for immigration candidates of economic class.

Pathways for immigrants to Canada

Canada offers more than 100 pathways for immigrants coming through economic class. In the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025, the primary pathways are the PNP or Provincial Nominee Program and Express Entry.

The candidates for other pathways for economic class like the AIP or Atlantic Immigration Program and Quebec skilled worker program should also complete the language test recognized by IRCC.

The candidates should also achieve the required CLB or Canadian Language Benchmark score set in that specific pathway.
