The Immigration Minister of Canada Ahmed Hussen advocated a progressive immigration policy during his Australia visit to multicity. He was speaking at the New South Wales University in Sydney.
Immigration is not just a portfolio to Hussen but a life experience. He had arrived as a refugee to Canada at the age of 16. Hussen became the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Minister of Canada in 2017.
The history of modern Canada is a history of migration said the Canadian Minister. Excluding the Indigenous people, remaining Canadians are either decedents of migrants or migrants themselves. He added.
Elaborating on the global trends, Hussen said that investment and talents are on the move now like never before. These will prefer the nations that are forthcoming to them, he added, as quoted by the SBS.
Increased immigration is a key strategy to address challenges posed by the aging population in diverse nations, said Hussen. Politicians have two choices, said the Minister. One is to gamble with anxieties regarding immigration and win votes. The second is to take a higher path and discuss the benefits of immigration, said Hussen.
Canada, Australia, and other developed nations must be ambitious regarding immigration, said the Immigration Minister of Canada. We have an immigration target of 310,000 fresh immigrants for Canada in 2018, he added.
Regarding the integration of newly arrived immigrants to any nation, Hussen said that it is a 2-way path. Integration cannot be expected if there is an absence of a welcoming environment in the nation, he added.
