Reasons to increase the tourist tax:

Amsterdam deputy officers stressed that this approach aims to decrease the overcrowding outside the city. This effort will also keep the city clean and tackle urgent issues within the neighborhood.

Buren also revealed the same issue that Venice and Barcelona face, highlighting the shared objective of financing local services without necessarily discouraging visitors.

This year, with the expectations of over 20 million visitors, Amsterdam faced challenges with a growing tourist count.

The budget traveler’s areas, like red-light districts, are equally affected. The city is actively taking comprehensive measures to manage and control tourism, including commitments to limit domestic and foreign visitors to 20 million.

As previously, it was ranked as the top European country and the capital destination for tourists in 2023; Amsterdam appeals beyond its reputation towards marijuana use.

Amsterdam Tax increase in 2024:

Amsterdam will increase the tourist tax and might claim the title of European Union city with the highest tourist tax. According to the report, the tax surge will increase from 12.5% to €21.80 per night with an average room rent of €175 per person by 2024.

The tax surge will increase cruise passenger fees from €8 to €11 per visitor. Amsterdam will also boost tourist tax by €65 million in 2024.

The city's charm and attractive features, like picturesque canals, stunning architecture, historical World War II memorials, vibrant culture, diverse cuisine, and warm hospitality, contribute to its popularity among travelers.
