More than 15,000 New Zealanders have applied for citizenship since the government opened a new route to citizenship last month, or about 375 daily bases.
Holders of special category visa are now able to apply directly for citizenship without first becoming permanent residents which were into effect from July 01, 2023. Along with other eligibility requirements, they must adhere to the four-year residence rule.
Nearly 35% of applications were submitted from Queensland, with Victoria (30%) and New South Wales (20%) following closely behind.

After the government’s announcement regarding the eased citizenship policies for Kiwis on July 01, 2023, half of the Australian citizenship applicants are from New Zealand.
Under the special category visa New Zealanders are allowed to live, work, and study in Australia for a longer duration.
Approximately 380,000 of the 670,000 New Zealanders who are currently residing in Australia on special category visas are now directly qualified for citizenship (those who arrived after 2001).
Giles added that several people who have spent years working and living in Australia and actively supporting local communities will benefit from the changes that are in to effect from July 01, 2023.
