Details about the immigration wrap in 2023:

In 2023, along with these four countries: Canada, Germany, Australia, and the UK, there were other countries as well who took the initiative to attract the best and brightest to their country. In the Global Talent Competitiveness Index ranking Switzerland is at the top nation in attracting and retaining talent.

Singapore and the United States rounded up a total of three slots in the list dominated by European nations. Whereas Canada, Germany, and France made a larger impact throughout the year to better their ranks.

Measures taken by different countries in 2023:

Canada:

Canada stood as the betting immigration as a step to prevent economic decline. Mostly, one-fourth of Canada is formed by immigrants. This year, Canada took specific policy calls to invite more tech talents to the country, giving a competition to the United States. Canada’s Tech Talent strategy has included an innovation stream under the International Mobility Program, visas for more digital nomads, and improving existing programs such as the Global Skills Strategy and the Start-up Visa.

Canada also upgraded their start-up visa (SUV) program giving applications to work with that permit for three years instead of one year. They are also eligible for open work permits. Canada went as far as to offer work permits for H-1B visa holders living in the US- maxing the limit up to 10,000 applications in 24 hours.

Germany :

German entry requirements for non-European Union (EU) nationals were sought in the job market. The plan included modernizing the visa-issuing process and relaxing other rules to make Germany more appealing to skilled IT workers.

The major announcement was the new opportunity card and its point system. The card will allow foreigners and university degrees to come to Germany for one year to hunt for jobs.

Opportunity Card will offer them fulfilling specific criteria, which will earn application points. These criteria may also include-

  • Proficiency in German or English
  • Established connection To Germany
  • Spouse benefit

United Kingdom:

The UK has seen the most immigration uncertainty over the past year. From 2024, the majority who are seeking employment in the UK have to go through a points-based system. The new threshold is set at a minimum of £38,700, representing a substantial increase of nearly 50% from the current £26,200 minimum salary requirement.

However, there is a slight disappointment with the UK Global Talent Visa. The UK Global Visa is meant to bring award winners in academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology. But after that, they only received three applicants since August.

In spring 2024, the government also planned to increase the minimum income threshold to be qualified for a family visa. Initially, the surge was proposed at £38,700, a surge from the current £18,600, analysis of the potential separation from the families. As a result, the minimum income required has been adjusted to £29,000.

The government has said that this figure will increase in the future reaching £34,500 and later on reaching to initial proposal plan of £38,700.

Australia:

Australia is set to introduce rigorous visa regulation concerning students and low-skilled workers as a part of a strategy to decrease immigrants to 50% by next year. The proposed reform will include higher Scores required in English proficiency tests, and increase scrutiny on second visa application to extend stay.

Other than this , Australia has introduced new skills in demand visas as a strategy to address skill gaps and enhance worker mobility within the labor market. The visa is designed to replace the Temporary Skills Shortage (Subclass 482) visa, offering a better pathway for specialist skills, core skills, and essential skills. The visa will also provide 4years of clear pathways with permanent residency.
