Australia has maintained its tough stand for New Zealand immigrants. The Foreign Minister of Australia Julie Bishop said that there is no change in the nation’s policy for deportation and detention of New Zealand nationals. This has been announced by Ms. Bishop in Auckland during her meeting with New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
The Government of New Zealand had earlier raised concerns over unfair treatment for New Zealand nationals owing to immigration policies of Australia. The visa for non-nationals of Australia can be canceled if they fail in the test for good character.
Meanwhile, Julie Bishop said that the policy was universally applicable to all immigrants arriving in Australia. It was not exclusively for New Zealand nationals, she added. She also added that discussions are midway with the Government of New Zealand over the issue, as quoted by the Radionz Co NZ.
Julie Bishop said that Australia has very close ties with New Zealand. Cases pertaining to immigrants are being discussed and managed. She reaffirmed the commitment to consult New Zealand on issues affecting nationals of New Zealand and the bilateral ties.
New Zealand had long ago offered to settle 150 refugees in Australia. They are at the processing centers offshore and this was also discussed. The Foreign Minister of Australia restated the position of the Australian government to consider other options first.
Ms. Bishop said that New Zealand and Australia share closest and deepest of relationships. New Zealand is a natural and essential partner of Australia and will remain so, added the Minister.
