Australia may add a values test for immigrants who apply for Permanent Residency, said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. This is with the intention to safeguard its immensely successful multicultural society, he added.
Earlier, the idea for values test for immigrant PR applicants was floated by Alan Tudge the Multicultural and Citizenship Minister. This was at the Australia-UK Leadership Forum. This test was for fending off isolation, as quoted by the Guardian.
Speaking at the forum held at London, Tudge said that the immigration system is slightly tilting towards the separatist EU multicultural model. This needs to be firmly reversed to the integrated path of Australia, he added.
The challenges for social cohesion faced by Australia are similar to the situation faced by the UK at present. This includes challenging of liberal values and ethnic isolation.
Turnbull made a reference to the values test at Tasmania. He added that it makes sense to add values test for prospective PR applicants. We are definitely considering this, he affirmed.
Turnbull took pride in declaring that Australia is the most successful multicultural society globally. One amongst the factors for this is that immense efforts have been made for the integration of immigrants in the nation. It has also been endeavored to ensure that multiculturalism is beneficial to everyone, added the Prime Minister. This includes the diversity of the ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds of residents in Australia, he said.
