Australia Partner Visas have been expanded to include same-sex partners and this has caused jubilation amongst the advocates of marriage equality. They have greeted the changes to the Australia Partner Visas as a positive sign. The federal government of Australia has expanded the applicants’ category of visas for partners. This will also include same-sex partners now. It has been done just a few days after same-sex marriage was given legal approval in Australia. The Department of Immigration has revised its application process for Australia Partner Visas. Same-sex partners can now apply for Subclasses 820, 801, 309, and 100 Partner visas. They can also apply for the Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage visa, as quoted by the SBS. The changes that have been made effective to these visas enable individuals in the same-sex marriage to apply for the visa as the spouse of the partner. Earlier they had to apply as the ‘de facto partner’ of the partner. The individuals in same-sex relationship with an authentic intention to get married to their Australian partner can apply for a Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage visa. Earlier, same-sex partners had to apply for the permanent interdependent visa. They had to fulfill tough criterions to demonstrate that interdependent relationship does exist. Rodney Croome the spokesman for Just Equal said that the tougher criterions had caused much distress to the same-sex partners. This had also kept the couples separated, added the advocate for Marriage equality.
