As planned and announced recently, Australia has reopened its borders on December 15, 2021, to skilled migrants and foreign students who are fully vaccinated. This move will revive Australia immigration as well as the country’s economy that has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The reopening was in fact delayed owing to the threat from the new COVID variant, Omicron. Australian PM Scott Morrison assured that the government is well-prepared to deal with the ongoing threat of the pandemic. He banked on the high vaccination rates in the country and said it indicates the fighting potential of the country against the COVID-19.
Currently, 90% of the Australian population above the age of 16 have received 2 doses of the vaccine. The country has also reduced the waiting time for the booster shot after Omicron surfaced.
With the borders now open, the problem of labor shortages will finally begin to get solved. This is necessary for the economy too.
Foreign students arriving to study in Australia are worth A$35 billion a year. Now that overseas students can arrive in Australia as the borders are opened, the businesses in Australia will find candidates to fill many jobs that are casual in nature.
The official data shows that there were over 235,000 foreigners, including 160,000 international students who held Australian visas at the end of October 2021.
