Transition of Occupation Classification in Australia

ANZSCO was first introduced in 2006 and has been the foundation of occupational classification in Australia and New Zealand. Although Australia and New Zealand ended their joint management in October 2024, both countries have now implemented separate systems, such as Australia with OSCA and New Zealand with the National Occupation List (NOL).

What is the new OSCA 1.0 version?

OSCA was developed after a two-year review involving over 2,000 stakeholders, 800 submissions, and 1,000 reviewed occupations.

OSCA is a better and updated classification compared to ANZSCO

  • About 300 new occupations were added, while 250 outdated occupations were removed
  • Unit groups were increased to 421 compared to 364 in ANZSCO 2022
  • A total number of 1156 occupations are added.
  • The shift from the Unit Group level (4-digit code) in ANZSCO to the occupation level (6-digit code) in OSCA is different.
  • Removal of gendered language in classification
  • Enhanced coverage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander occupations

Benefits of the new OSCA 1.0 version

Here are the benefits of OSCA that brings several advantages than ANZSCO such as:

  • OCSCA addresses the labor gap in ANZSCO by including occupations such as 31133: Content Creator (Social Media) and aligning with modern labor market needs.
  • The classification simplifies understanding and provides more details of specific occupation information
  • OSCA makes adaptability to ongoing changes in the Australian workforce better.

With the introduction of OSCA, Australia now has a better and more powerful modernized tool for skilled workers. OSCA promises a more transparent and efficient system for migrants, policymakers, and employers. The Anzscosearch has been updated to include the newly released OSCA v1.0 catalog for the Main search tool, though it still has not yet updated OSCA for migration purposes.
