The importance of international students in Australia’s immigration is becoming evident in the latest measures adopted by the Australian government.
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) will be the first state to lead a pilot program to bring back international students. This pilot program is ready to roll out in July 2020. In time the program will be adopted across Australia by its constituent states and universities.
This step is a significant part of the government’s 3-phase plan to re-open Australia. For this, restrictions will be eased for the students at the border and allow them to arrive to study in Australia.
The significance of students coming to the country is evident from the fact that they bring thousands of dollars to Australia and its universities. This in turn helps to create jobs and contribute in a big way to the economy.
After the hit of COVID-19, the reduction in students in Australia has already created a great loss to the country. The universities themselves have incurred an estimated loss to the tune of $8 billion. The country’s economy has suffered an estimated impact of $30 billion.
A continuous reduction in student influx could cause the Australian economy to lose $40 billion by 2023. Hence, bringing back international students has been considered as a priority and apt measures have been taken.
