Overseas students in Australia will have to satisfy new language standards for English from 2018 to ensure that they are equipped for higher education. This was reported by the leading media in Australia. Overseas Students Intensive Courses for the English Language will be used for direct admission to a tertiary course. The requirements will be applicable for training, vocational and university courses.
Simon Birmingham the Australia Minister for Education and Training informed regarding the new language standards for overseas students. Instances have been reported wherein students were unable to completely participate in group work said Birmingham. Some were reported to have struggled over the assignments, added the Minister.
The courses are essential for the overseas students as well as local students enrolled in Australian universities. It is to ensure that they possess the language skills in English for being successful. The courses are a part of the intensive program. This is inclusive of minimum 20 hours of in-person sessions with instruction in the English language, as quoted by the Xinhuanet.
For 2015-16, overseas students generated export income of more than more than 15.6 billion USD. This was an increase of 8% over the previous year. Tertiary institutions and universities made up for more than 50% of this income. The statistics were revealed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
According to the Universities Australia industry group, overseas education also supports more than 130,000 jobs in Australia.
