Abstract: The visa reviewing body of Australia, AAT, will be scrapped.

Earlier, AAT or Administrative Appeals Tribunal had the authority to review visas for migrants and refugees. On December 16, 2022, the Attorney-General of Australia, Mark Dreyfus announced that AAT would be abolished. It would be replaced by a new organization that would review visas.

The AAT reviewed decisions on issues like welfare payments to citizens of Australia to immigrant visas. It is also used to process visas for refugees. AAT has been functional since 1976. The new body is expected to be functional by the end of 2023.

What are the changes to immigration to Australia?

The new body reviewing visa decisions would have a new staff. The staff would be merit-based and qualified. Mr. Dreyfus stated that current members of the tribunal were required to reapply if they wish to work in their previous positions in the new body.

A task force headed by the former High Court judge would work on the structure and power of the legislation and new body. It would be implemented next year.
