The number of foreign nationals who have been granted Belgian citizenship, often following an Integration process, has reached its highest level in more than two decades. According to a recent report, applicants who acquired Belgian citizenship in the first nine months of 2024 were nationals from Morocco, Syria, Romania, Afghanistan, and Turkiye.
In the first nine months of 2024, 45,538 applicants were granted Belgian citizenship, an increase of nine per cent compared to the same period in 2023.
According to migration experts, the increase in the number of citizenships granted by authorities in Belgium emerged from the 2015-2016 migration. A larger number of refugees have recently been granted citizenship.
In 2024, Belgium permitted foreign nationals of Belgian diplomats to obtain nationality without being required to wait for five years after introducing a new amendment to the Belgium Nationality Code. This new rule was introduced to protect the Belgian diplomat’s foreign partner against discrimination.
