Key aspects of the Australia Immigration Level Plan, 2022

  • The Business Council of Australia to push migration cap forwards to 2,20,000
  • The jobs and skill summit is a great opportunity to reset our long-term migration program
  • Over 100,000 visas for overseas workers are yet to be processed

Overview:

The Business Council wants the permanent migration cap boosted to over 200,000 places temporarily to make up for the migration slowdown during the pandemic.

The Business Council of Australia

The business group is about to implement a temporary lift on migration caps for holiday and work visas from now on, until the jobs and skills summit that is to be conducted in the next week of August 2022.

The Business Council of Australia is also insisting on the government push the permanent migration cap forwards to 2,20,000, temporarily to account for the shortfall in migration during the pandemic.

The business council has suggested lowering the migration cap back to 190,000 places after two years.

Jennifer Westacott, the chief executive of BCA, said, "We want to see the permanent migration program advancing at a minimum of two-thirds of places for skilled workers."

Ms Westacott mentioned that it was crucial to develop the required confidence in the migration system of Australia, by providing useful information for visa holders, by toughening penalties for exploitation and by setting a high bar for the treatment of migrant workers.

She said that the summit is a great opportunity to reset our long-term migration program and manage the short-term challenge of labor force shortages across the whole economy.

The business council has outlined its preferred changes to the migration program along with a suite of recommendations that are specifically designed to improve the abilities of domestic workers.

This included the development of digital skills that shares a record tracking the worker credentials and training that was gained throughout their career, as well as a boost to funding for vocational training.

The business council also needs the schooling system to be improved to prepare school leavers for further work or study.

Migration policy has also risen as a key issue ahead of the summit where most of the individuals agree that any lift in migration numbers should happen alongside an investment in local skills and training and the summit will be held in Canberra next Thursday and Friday of August 2022.
