Overview:

International students who have submitted a study permit application or have chosen to study online, will be able to continue their course online without affecting their PGWP eligibility, before 31st August.

The period of study completed online starting from 1st September will be deducted from the length of their post-graduation work permit, regardless of when the student began their studies.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has started a transition period for international students to pursue their studies online, while also offering a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), as the new school year is all set to begin.

After approaching various education territories, stakeholders, and distance learning measures have been extended to August 31, 2022. A general advisory has suggested the students make their way back to Canada except for any other complications.

International students who have submitted a study permit application or have chosen to study online, will be able to continue their course online without affecting their PGWP eligibility, before 31st August.

The period of study completed online starting from 1st September will be deducted from the length of their post-graduation work permit, regardless of when the student began their studies.

The extension of temporary distance learning measures will affect those starting programs from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023. Specifically, these measures will apply:

  • No more than 50% of the credits earned can be completed outside Canada to remain eligible for a PGWP
  • Studies completed online from outside Canada starting on September 1, 2023, will be deducted from the length of a future PGWP

The students were allowed to complete up to 100% of their program online, without affecting their eligibility for permanent residence. Before the pandemic, students were not allowed to take more than 50% of their program online and the time spent studying online was deducted from the length of their PGWP.
