New open work permit in Canada

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders whose work permit expires between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2022, may be eligible for the forthcoming PGWP extension.

Sean Fraser, the immigration minister, has extended the eligibility start date of the PGWP extension that was previously announced from January 2022 to September 2021.

The new policy is helpful to any individual who has an expiring PGWP, as the change is primarily intended to accommodate the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates who did not have the opportunity to apply for immigration through the Express Entry program since September 21, 2021.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have paused its draws for candidates who are PGWP holders to address the backlog in the immigration application. The draws for these candidates are said to resume on July 6, 2022.

Generally, the PGWPs is a single deal, as the international student graduates of the eligible full-time programs can get an open work permit for up to three years.

However, this new measure will permit the eligible PGWP holders to apply for a new open work permit with a validity period of up to 18 months.

This unique measure was announced in April 2022; however, the details on how to apply are still unavailable.

The PGWP holders are putting the expiring documents at risk and may have to get a new work permit, resign from their jobs, or even leave Canada.

Every year, ten of thousands of PGWP holders become permanent residents, already being well-integrated into the Canadian labor market because of their Canadian study and work. More than 88,000 PGWP holders have become permanent residents in 2021.

The government has predicted more than 50,000 individuals to benefit from this measure.
