International students are opting for colleges and universities in Canada. A record number of study permits were issued in 2022. Canada issued approximately 550,000 study permits issued last year. It was a 24.1% increase compared to the figures for 2021.

The increase in study permits in Canada followed the trends of the previous year.

Record Number of Canada Study Permits in 2022

IRCC or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada had issued 551,405 study permits. The details of study permits issued by Canada in the previous years are given below:

IRCC also has made the processing of study permits faster. In 2022, Sean Fraser, the Canadian Immigration Minister, stated that quick processing for study permits would be a priority for Canada.

The Canadian authorities hired 500 additional processing staff and digitized applications for study permits for faster processing. The processing time for the Canadian study permit application is 10 weeks, currently.

With a Canadian study permit, international students can graduate from a higher-learning institute in Canada and apply for a PGWP or Post-Graduation Work Permit. It helps to apply for jobs to gain work experience in the country. The work experience contributes to gaining Canada PR.

Work In Canada with a Study Permit

The candidates who have been issued Canada study permits can work through the following categories:

  • On campus without a work permit
  • Off-campus with a work permit
  • In co-op and internship programs with a work permit

After graduation, international students can apply for a work permit through the PGWP program. In this program, the work permit is for the length of the course. It has validity for a maximum of 3 years.

The work experience gained during PGWP is considered for the permanent residence application under the Express Entry system of Canada.

Under the CRS or Comprehensive Ranking System used in the Express Entry system programs, the applicants are awarded points on the basis of the:

  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Language proficiency in the official language
  • Skills in official language proficiency and education of the candidate's spouse or common-law partner
  • Having a valid job offer supported by a positive LMIA report.
  • Having a nomination for permanent residence by the provincial authorities
