A mutant variant of COVID-19 has been found active in the UK and world countries have been alerted of the new development. Canada is closely monitoring this new development. The country's trying to understand the impact of this new variant of the virus. It’s partnering with international bodies including the WHO.
The Canada immigration activities that have already been conducted in line with safety protocols for COVID-19 are now getting a stricter implementation.
The Canadian Prime Minister convened a meeting of the Incident Response Group on December 20, 2020, to discuss the new variant of the COVID-19 virus that has appeared in the UK. The meeting had the participation of:
Though the new virus variant is speculated to be more transmissible, no evidence is as yet available to prove that the virus is more severe and has an impact on vaccine efficacy and antibody response.
Following the new development in the pandemic situation, Canada has decided to suspend entry of all commercial and private passenger flights from the UK into the country for 72 hours, starting the midnight of December 20, 2020.
The existing restriction on travelling into the country will be maintained. So will be the measures of compulsory quarantine continued. In addition, passengers who arrived in Canada on December 20, 2020, subject to secondary screening. The enhanced measures that were implemented included increased scrutiny of quarantine plans. Additional instructions will be given to those who have arrived from the UK by the Canadian government.
