Canada plans to send invites via the Parent and Grandparents program

Canada will invite eligible Canadians and PR holders to sponsor their parents via the Parents and Grandparents Program for PR in 2025. As per the new announcement, Canada will not accept new invitations but will process the previous applications under the PGP from last year, 2024. Canada intends to accept up to 10,000 completed applications for sponsorship under the PGP program, including the chance to accept a sponsor sponsor’s pool. IRCC plans to receive invitations to apply to randomly select potential sponsors from that pool instead of receiving new forms.

Foreign nationals interested in sponsoring under the PGP in 2020 will have a chance to receive an interest in sponsoring under the PGP in 2020 and might receive an invite in 2025. As of now, the current PGP program will send invitations to those who have submitted interest to sponsor forms in the 2020 intake and have not yet re-opened. Canadians can sponsor their parents and grandparents under the PGP. They can use the super visa program to sponsor their parents to visit them in Canada for extended periods.

What is the Parents and Grandparents program?

The Parents and Grandparents (PGP) is a family reunification pathway that allows Canadian citizens, PR holders, and registered foreign nationals to sponsor their parents and grandparents for Permanent residency in Canada. To be eligible to apply for the PGP program, the applicant must meet specific requirements in addition to other requirements, such as:

  • Income requirement
  • Relatives must be admissible to Canada

Candidates cannot apply for PGP directly; rather, they must apply for an interest to sponsor form to the federal government and wait for an ITA. Sponsors will be selected randomly from the pool. As PGP has not re-opened since 2020, the Canadian government has sent ITAs to people who submitted interest to sponsor forms in the 2020 intake.
