What are Temporary foreign workers in Canada?

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is a temporary Canada work visa that provides opportunities to work in Canada for a short period. The Temporary Foreign Workers in Canada program is an Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) program that addresses the labor shortage market through immigration. Through LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment), the employer hires a temporary foreign worker (TFW) to work in Canada. The TFW is valid for only six months.

Under this program, which further contains agriculture streams, live-in caregiver streams, and high and low-wage foreign worker streams, they would be hired by a Canadian company as a worker in Canada. The foreign workers are allowed to work for one employer only.

Later, through the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), the Canadian government will process the application and the document on whether to allow the Canada PR or citizen to move ahead with the work. LMIA needs to approve the work permit or the application might be refused.

What initiative was taken to improve the temporary foreign workers' pathway?

Four initiatives are taken to improve the Temporary foreign worker's pathway to improve the Canadian immigration process for TFWP:

  • Employers from seven sectors of Facilities may hire 30% of their workforce to improve low-wage positions through TFWP (Food Manufacturing, Wood Product Manufacturing, Furniture and Product Manufacturing, Accommodation and Construction, Hospitals, and Residential Care Facilities)
  • During the two-year cap time of employment, it will uphold its position under the provincial or territorial minimum wage.
  • From now on, Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) will have a reduced validity compared to the previous 18 to 12 months.
  • From 1st Jan 2024, employers will need to annually review TFWP to ensure that the workers are comparable to the minimum wage rate for a given occupation and region.

Eligibility Criteria to apply for the Temporary foreign workers program:

  • You must have a job in Canada.
  • You must have proof that you will leave Canada once your Work visa expires.
  • Financial independence
  • Clean criminal record
  • Medical insurance
