Scott Morrison, Australian PM, said that the case for cutting down immigration numbers is based on past experiences. He said that the immigration intake in the past many years has been below the annual cap. He also said that the process rigour will not be changed to bring in more migrants to Australia.

Speaking to reporters in Melbourne, Morrison said that the annual immigration cap for Australia was 190,000. The cap has remained the same since 2011. However, the number of successful applicants has been less than that for many years now.

In the last fiscal year, immigration numbers fell to 162,000. This has been the lowest in almost a decade.

Morrison believes that since Australia has increased the integrity measures, fewer visa applicants have been able to succeed. With eligibility requirements becoming more stringent, fewer candidates are able to now make the cut. He also said that the Govt. does not propose to alter the rigour of the process to let more migrants in.

The dip in the number of immigrants in 2017-18 was due to the reduction in the skilled and family visas. Skilled visas were reduced by 12,000 and there was a 15% reduction in family visas. In comparison, Australia admitted 183,000 migrants in 2016-17, as per SBS News.
