Netherlands will allow Dutch citizens in the UK to hold dual nationality so as to enable them to obtain residency rights in the UK. It will be empowering the Dutch in the UK in case their rights aren’t respected in that country after Brexit.
The upper house of Netherland’s parliament has up voted the with the majority of parties being in favor. The law has yet to be accepted in the lower house of Netherland’s parliament.
As Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, the MP of D66 party thinks, the new legislation will prevent the Dutch in the UK to avoid becoming hostage to Brexit.
The current law in the Netherlands permits its citizens to hold only 2 passports. Dual nationality has been very restricted. For any citizen to get Dutch nationality through naturalization, he/she must give up the existing citizenship.
Even though the draft legislation had offered Britons living in the Netherlands citizenship in the country, it did not take off as the Dutch parliament did not support it enough.
Though dual nationality is permitted in some particular cases, the EU Settlement Scheme is still in function. It attempts to help Swiss, EEA or EU citizens and their members of the family residing in the UK to stay in the country even after Britain leaves the EU.
The scheme, the biggest of its kind in UK history so far, has still a year more to go until it’s closed for applications. The last date of application is June 20, 2021.
