Easier English test has been proposed in the new redrafted bill for Australian citizenship by the Government of Australia. This will be reintroduced in the Senate informed Peter Dutton the Immigration Minister of India.
Meanwhile, immigrants who have applied for the Australian citizenship will be processed under current laws. The reforms to citizenship proposed by the Government failed to secure approval of the Senate. This included tougher English language test and increased waiting times for Australia PR holders.
Peter Dutton said that government is ready to accept the immigrants who possess band 5 scores in entrance test in English on par with IELTS. The proposed earlier score of Band 6 was sternly opposed by the Australian Senate members.
The tough score of band 6 became a major point for the deadlock in Senate. It was opposed strongly even by the team of Nick Xenophon on the crossbench. Band 6 is described as a ‘competent’ proficiency while band 5 is described as ‘modest’ proficiency, as quoted by the SBS.
The Immigration Minister also reassured the thousands of applicants for Australian citizenship. He said that the applications filed after April will be processed as per the existing laws. Dutton had informed the Senate committee that 47, 328 citizenship applicants would be affected if the changes were approved. This was due to the fact that their applications were lodged after April 20, 2017.
The originally proposed bill failed to secure the Senate approval as Xenophon team, Greens and the Labor all opposed it.
