In order to deal with increased arrivals of migrants and applicants in need of external protection, the European Asylum Support Office has appointed support personnel to the Canary Islands. They will help the Spanish authorities to administer the centers where those doing migration overseas to Spain are received.
The personnel deployed will train the officials involved in camp management and migration services, standardize the information provision workflow, and undertake the management of data. EASO will also expand this operation in all Mediterranean EU Member States. These are states that getting a high number of asylum seekers and include Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Malta, and Italy.
Support to the reception authorities in Spain has already been started earlier. This was after a JRNA was implemented by Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration and EASO. Now, the agency is waiting for approval to convert EASO into the EUAA.

Spain is EASO’s 5th ongoing operation. EASO is also considering the posting of around 2,000 personnel in the 5 member states namely Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Malta, and Italy.
EASO has given a forecast of investing €70 million in its operating locations in the next 12 months. This will come close to half of its yearly budget. Over €45 million of this amount will go into providing support to the operational activities in Greece.
