The first group of international students arriving in Australia ever since COVID-19 began was warmly welcomed. 63 Students from Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China arrived in Australia by a chartered flight. They landed in the city of Darwin.

These students are in Australia on a student visa to attend Charles Darwin University. Few are new to the campus and others were enrolled earlier already. These students arriving to study in Australia are taking part in a pilot program. The program intends to boost the local economy. It also sets a template for international students to arrive in various other parts of Australia.

These students are arriving in Australia with a growing tension between China and Australia in the backdrop. It stems from an image tweeted by a Chinese official apparently showing an Australian soldier killing a child.

The students arriving in Australia must undertake a health screening before departure. They must have undergone a 2-week quarantine before they can start attending classes.

These students, arriving in Darwin willing to study overseas in Australia, are important to the economy of the region.
