German residence in 2021– The pathways to learn about

There are 3 ways in which you can become one with Germany:

  • A settlement permit
  • A permanent EU resident permit
  • Naturalization

Settlement Permit

If you want to become a permanent resident in Germany via a settlement permit, you have to be a skilled professional who already has a temporary residence permit in Germany. You are considered a skilled professional if:

  • You have completed your vocational training
  • You have completer your academic training
  • You are an international researcher according to Directive EU 2016/801

Being a qualified professional with a valid Germany work visa, you will need the following to be able to receive a settlement permit:

  • You already hold a residence permit according to Sections 18a, 18b, or 18d of the German Residence Act for a minimum period of 4 years
  • You can meet your living expenses without depending on public funds
  • You have made voluntary or mandatory contributions to the statutory pension insurance fund for at least 48 months
  • You are employed and are working at a job you are qualified for or a job that suits your qualifications
  • You have sufficient knowledge of the German language besides the knowledge of the social and legal order and the German lifestyle (proven by passing the Life in Germany test)
  • You have living space in Germany to accommodate yourself and your family

With all these requirements fulfilled, you can make an appointment at your nearest Foreigners Authority to apply for a settlement permit.

Permanent EU Resident permit

If you have a Permanent EU Resident permit, you can live and work in Germany permanently. Holding this permit, you can migrate to almost every EU country. There, you can get hold of a residence permit on facilitated conditions.

If you want a Permanent EU Resident permit, you must:

  • Have lived in Germany legally for at 5 years
  • Can make a living and support and take care of yourself and your family
  • Have sufficient proficiency in the German language along with the basic knowledge of the social and legal system and lifestyle of Germany
  • Have enough living space for yourself and your family
  • Have made voluntary or mandatory contributions to the statutory pension insurance fund for at least 60 months

Naturalization

Naturalization is the final and ultimate way to become a permanent resident in Germany. Along with becoming a German citizen, you will also be a national of the EU with all the rights and obligations conferred on you.

To undergo naturalization:

  • You must have been legally a resident of Germany for at least 8 years
  • You must possess an indefinite right of residence in Germany if not a limited residence permit convertible to an indefinite right of residence
  • You must be able to support yourself and your family and dependents without depending on public benefit funds
  • You must have sufficient knowledge and skill in the German language with a Level B1 proficiency in a language exam
  • You must pass a naturalization test
  • You must have not been convicted of a criminal offense
  • You must accept the Basic Law (Grundgesetz), which is the constitution of Germany
  • You must renounce your previous nationality
