On February 2nd, 2024, the new reformed citizenship law was approved. According to Mahmut Özdemir of SPD, the new law would benefit the foreigners to keep their other identity when obtaining citizenship.
The new German citizenship law is supposed to enter into force in May 2024. As soon as this law becomes effective, they can gain German citizenship without giving up their other citizenship.
Under this new law, foreigners can apply for German citizenship after five years of staying in Germany instead of eight years. As for those married to German citizens, their period will be reduced to four years.
Rules will be a bit approachable for guest workers who arrived in Germany from 1950 onwards. These people won’t need to undergo a test. They only have to prove they can speak German to gain citizenship.
