Getting an ECA for Canada immigration – What you need to know

The basic purpose of ECA is to gauge the level of education you have as a foreigner in comparison to the educational standards of Canada.

ECA is meant to verify that your foreign diploma, certificate, degree, or any other proof of your education is valid and has equals in Canada. The ECA report is supposed to show that the foreign certificate/diploma/degree that you have completed is equal to a Canadian secondary school/post-secondary credential.

Where can you get ECA?

There are designated organizations that are responsible for issuing an ECA. Only those assessments that come from those organizations will be accepted by the Canada immigration system.

Assessment of foreign education

• International Credential Assessment Service of Canada
• Comparative Education Service: University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies
• World Education Services
• International Credential Evaluation Service
• International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS)

Assessment for specialist and family physicians

The ECA report has to be obtained from the Medical Council of Canada (designated April 17, 2013) in case any of the following is your primary occupation:

• General Practitioner/Family Physician (NOC 3112)
• Specialist physician (NOC 3111)

Assessment for pharmacists (NOC 3131)

If you belong to this job category, your ECA report will depend on the job you do.

In case you require a license to practice, you need to obtain your report from the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. This is applicable to you if you are into taking care of patients in a

• Community pharmacy
• Long-term care facility
• Hospital facility

In case you aren’t required to own a license for your job, you can get the assessment done from any other ECA organization. This is applicable to jobs that may need you to have a pharmacy degree but may not require having a license to practice. This could include:

• The pharma industry
• The government
