Greece's parliament has recently issued a new legislature that secures residency and work permits for undocumented migrants, addressing the country's urgent need for unskilled labor.
The legislature is linking the right of residence and verified employment status. Besides 30,000 migrants and mainly agricultural workers, it will benefit many migrants from Albania, Georgia, and the Philippines. It grants a three-year residency exclusively tied to an existing job.
This move aims to enhance rights, encourage tax compliance, and protect workers from exploitation by establishing legal status. This legislation creates a positive impact on working conditions. The new legislature also collects praise from the United Nations migration and refugee agencies. It applies to migrants residing in Greece without a permit for at least three years until the end of November. It excluded those who entered earlier.
The Greek Migration Ministry reported a 33 percent decrease in the flow of undocumented migrants in November compared to October. According to the data, immigrants arrived in Greece:
