SAT/ACT to be reintroduced in the US

The California Institute of Technology and Harvard University are to re-establish the ACT or SAT as an essential requisite for admission to these universities. Some elite schools are also planning to reintroduce standard tests like ACT or SAT after a pause caused by the pandemic.

Harvard announced that the new policy will be effective for students applying for admission in fall 2025, revising what was decided earlier to make tests optional. Caltech applicants are required to submit test scores while applying for admission this fall. Schools like Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown are reconsidering bringing backtests.

Importance of SAT/ACT

The dean of Harvard’s Arts and Sciences, Hopi Hoekstra, reported that this change is to "strengthen our ability to identify these promising students and to give Harvard the opportunity to support their development as thinkers and leaders who will contribute to shaping our world."

Recent reports by economist Raj Chetty and Harvard professors highlighted the importance of standardized tests for identifying under-resourced and less-privileged students. He added that ACTs and SATs were "highly predictive" of post-college activities.

Efforts made by educational institutions to implement changes

MIT, Harvard, and Yale are trying to admit students from rural backgrounds who could not apply to high-class colleges. The colleges have more contexts about the students than peers from their high school if they apply with their test scores.

Efforts are being made to introduce test requirements at Harvard while the university is still grappling with recruitment changes. Reports show that 54,008 students applied for next fall's freshman class at Harvard.
