Working hours and paid time off

In Malta, the weekly working hours are 40 hours. Employers follow a workweek of 5 days in Malta. Also, employees are entitled to 25 days of annual leave per year.

Leave benefits

Maternity leave

Working women are allowed to take 14 weeks of maternity leave that’s paid.  They can also take an extra 4 weeks of leave that’s unpaid. They are eligible to take maternity leave 2 weeks prior to their due date.

Parental Leave

In Malta, workers are entitled to parental leave that’s unpaid for. This leave is granted for 4 months for the birth/adoption of a child. They can take these 4 months of leave till the child grows to the age of 8 years.

Average salary and taxes

The average annual salary in Malta in Q1 of 2021 is €221,412.

The average monthly salary in Malta covers transport, housing, and other benefits. The range of salaries depends on the job a worker undertakes.

Overseas workers immigrating to Malta will have to pay a higher tax for the first 183 days. Post this, tax is cut on the basis of their income. The rate of deduction won’t exceed 35% of the annual gross income.

Social security benefits

Malta’s Social Security Act offers workers a number of benefits. These include disability and retirement pensions, benefits for injury, unemployment, and sickness, childcare benefits, and medical assistance.

If workers want to avail of these benefits, they as well as their employers will have to pay a maximum of 10% of the gross salary as SSC (Social Security Contributions). This payment will cover the social security payments that take care of the workers if they are affected by unemployment, injury, or sickness. It also covers child benefits and pensions.

In Malta, you can access public healthcare services if you keep with the entitlements as laid out by Malta’s Ministry of Health.
