Australia has established a new permanent migration scheme that will target high-skilled techies in seven “future-focussed fields”. These fields include cybersecurity, quantum computing and fintech. The new scheme aims to maintain Australia’s competitive edge.
Australia first flagged the “Global Talent Independent Program” in June this year. It was launched by David Coleman, Immigration Minister, and aims to attract the best talent from across the globe. The program aims to attract 5,000 high-skilled workers at the top of their field between July 2019 and June 2020. The program also offers to fast-track the Australia PR applications.
This program is separate from the Global Talent Employer-Sponsored Program. The GTES was made permanent in August this year.
To be eligible under the GTIP, applicants must have work experience in any one of the seven future-focussed fields. Applicants should also earn more than AUD 149,000 per annum in Australia to be eligible for Permanent Residency.
The seven eligible fields under the GTIP is:
Global Talent Officers from the Dept. of Home Affairs plan to seek out talented techies instead of waiting for migrants to apply. These officers have already been deployed at New Delhi, Washington DC, Berlin, Shanghai, Singapore, Dubai and Santiago.
As per The Australian Financial Review, Mr Coleman has announced that the PR process through the GTIP will only take weeks and not months. However, the standard health, character and security checks will also apply to the GTIP.
