In 2023, the number of permanent foreign residents in Switzerland rose by 19,118 to 181,553. Mostly, 80 per cent of immigrants came from EU or EFTA countries. The third nation is accounted for 51,070 individuals.

Of 130,483 EU/EFTA citizens, 70% came from permanent residents, whereas 75,346 were from seasonal jobs.
For a fair comparison, both the categories increased by 16.3 and 13.7 per cent. In 2023, third-country workers used 75 per cent of short-stay permits (3,016) and 80 per cent of the residence permits (3,616).
Meanwhile, long-stay permits for family reunification accounted for 26.5 per cent of immigration. To be more specific, 46,281 immigrants immigrated to Switzerland in 2023, with 15% being family members of Swiss citizens. Family reunification cases rose to 76 per cent.
In 2009, 15 per cent of those who migrated to Switzerland obtained Swiss citizenship, whereas 33 per cent were granted a residency permit.
Last year, 2.3 million of the total number of foreigners were residing in Switzerland. Also, 1,540,798 were EU/EFTA nationals, and 772,419 accounted for third-country citizens.
