Indian students made up for more than 1 lakh enrolments in Australia in 2018. With an increase of almost 25%, India now stands at the second spot for overseas students in Australia. Indian students make up for 12.4% of the total enrolments of foreign students.

China tops the list for the most number of overseas students in Australia. More than 2.56 lakh Chinese students enrolled in Australia in 2018. China makes up 29% of the overall enrolments of foreign students in Australia.

An Additional Provisional Graduate Visa has also been announced by the Federal Govt. Foreign students would be able to avail an extra year under the same. Eligible students would need to complete their graduation from a registered University through its regional campus.

Currently, students who complete their Bachelors or Masters from Australia can get a 2-year Post Study Work Visa. However, by studying at a regional University, they can become eligible for an additional year.

The new Additional Provisional Graduate Visa is aimed at helping Australia decongest its major cities. Most popular cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast etc. are struggling with congestion due to population increase. The extra year that the new Visa gives will help attract more foreign students.

To be eligible, students need to complete their education from a regional campus in Australia. They need to complete a mandatory stay period of 2 years. However, this Visa would be available to foreign students passing out on or after October 2021, as per Times of India.

Foreign students who are currently on a Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa may also qualify for an extra year on their Post Study Work Visa. For that, they need to be continuously residing in any regional area of Australia.

Scott Morrison, PM of Australia, has also announced new tertiary scholarships. It will be available for both domestic and international students to study in regional Universities of Australia. Each scholarship would be worth $15,000. More than 1000 domestic and foreign students would be able to avail these scholarships each year.
