Good news for international students who are undergoing their study in USA. USCIS has announced a new rule that’s meant for STEM students. They will now have the flexibility to complete their OPT after graduation. This has been granted to them owing to the delay in processing applications owing to COVID-19.
The OPT program allows international students to work in USA for a year after their graduation. But the students must complete the OPT within 14 months of completing their graduation in the USA. The 14 months will be calculated from the date of approval of form I-765. This is the OPT after the completion for applications to be submitted between October 1, 2020, and May 1, 2021.
There have been delays in Form I-765 in the past few months owing to COVID-19 restrictions. That has resulted in an increase in the number of filings. Hence, the students had to be in waiting for around 6 weeks to get their notice of receipt. By increasing the flexibility of students applying for OPT the agency is giving them a big advantage.
