Highlights: IRCC allots $4.5 billion for Canadian immigration in FY 2023-24

  • The Canadian Federal government released Budget 2023.
  • The budget focuses on supporting current Canadian immigration programs and streamlining application processing.
  • An additional $55 million have been allocated toward the Canadian immigration system.
  • Nearly $50.8 million have been allocated to expand eligibility for the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) Program for travelers from low-risk countries.
  • IRCC also committed an additional $171.4 million to extend the current CUAET agreement to July 15, 2023.

Federal Budget 2023 positively impacts Canadian Immigration

In 2022 budget, the government committed nearly $1.6 billion towards Canadian immigration in six years, while the Budget 2023 will primarily focus on general policies for newcomers settlement in Canada.

Supporting Current Canada Immigration Programs

The recent budget 2023 projects that the majority of funding will be utilized to support current Canadian immigration programs and improve the overall application processing system.

Here's a list of how the current federal budget 2023 will further improve Canada's immigration system over the next fiscal year:

  • $10 million to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP): Federal government proposed $10 million funds over five years to help expedite Canadian citizenship application processing by implementing biometrics.
  • $50.8 million to expand the eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) program: Budget also proposed $50.8 million funds for over four years to expand the eTA program for travellers from low-risk countries. This, in turn, will result in better utilization of resources for screening travellers from high-risk countries.
  • $171.4 million to extend the current CUAET agreement: In the Budget 2023, the government also allocated an additional $171.4 million to support Ukrainians who wish to migrate to Canada amidst an on-going crisis. The existing Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel agreement will be extended to July 15, 2023.
  • $123.2 million towards supporting Francophone immigration: Additional $123.2 million funds will be utilized to expand the French language in regions outside of Quebec, supporting Canadian employers to hire and retain French-speaking foreign nationals and supporting French-speaking newcomers once they reach Canada.
