From December 1, 2021, Australia will open its borders for foreign students and skilled workers. It will be possible again for them to migrate to Australia after the lifting of extremely stringent restrictive measures that were imposed by the country on visitors and immigrants.
It’s been 20 months since Australia was shut to the outside world to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2021, the Australian PM, Scott Morrison, had removed restrictions on Australians who could thereafter travel overseas. But the restrictions continued for non-Australian nationals.
Business groups were urging the Australian government to allow vaccinated visa holders to return to Australia and join the vacant job positions that they had.
Even if the new decision will open the gates to Australia, it’s yet to be seen when international visitors could come back to Australia. The country’s tourism sector has been facing a crisis that needs to be addressed, now that the overall situation is getting better.
With the new decision also, some Australian states will continue to impose quarantine measures. Australians who have been fully vaccinated as well as some visa holders could visit Australia conditionally. They can do so only if they have a negative COVID-19 test result. This result must be obtained before their departure to Australia. These individuals will include citizens of South Korea, Japan, and Singapore.
