International students who aspire to study in Australia often worry about where they will live in the country. When you are alone in a foreign country it is quite natural to be anxious. There are a number of international students in Australia. The country offers a wide variety of accommodation options to the numerous international students that it houses.

Here’s everything that you should know about student accommodation in Australia:

  1. On-campus accommodation

Most universities in Australia provide on-campus accommodation. This allows you to live near libraries and lecture halls and thus save time. Onsite accommodation offers cleanliness and safety as it is owned by the University. You also have all the University services close to you and the joy of living among your fellow students. Onsite accommodation also helps avoid lease agreements with landlords or for that matter, dodgy landlords.

However, due to the high number of international students coming to Australia each year, there are not enough on-campus accommodations for all.

The cost of on-campus accommodation is different for different campuses. University of Sydney’s International House costs $8,300 per semester. The International House at the University of Queensland costs $2,565 per semester.

  1. Private off-campus accommodation

If budget is not a constraint, you may prefer to live in private off-campus accommodation. They tend to be luxurious but at the same time, pricey. These are high-quality units that provide everything to make you feel at home. You may choose to live alone in a studio flat or live in a shared apartment.

An ensuite room in Darlington House, Sydney will cost you $646 per week. A bedroom in a shared apartment in Brisbane will cost you $299 per week.

Uni Lodgers, Urban Nest, and Iglu are some of the best private student accommodation providers in Australia.

  1. Homestays

If you are looking for an authentic Australian experience during your stay in Australia, you may want to opt for a homestay. It will allow you to live with an Australian family rather than renting your own accommodation.

Homestays are gaining immense popularity among international students in Australia. You have the support of a family in Australia as well as freedom from other students.

Many homestays are pre-vetted by the Universities and hence are quite safe and stable. However, it is advisable to do your own research to find the right one for you.

A homestay in Melbourne could cost anything between $32 and $300 per week, as per Study International.

  1. House/Room Shares

It is the most affordable student accommodation option in Australia. However, they may be the least luxurious of the others.

International students in the country often end up sharing space with 5 to 6 people. This may not be conducive to your studies. But if your budget does not permit luxury, this is a decent option to go for.
