Do you know about the Global Talent Scheme of Australia?

The Global Talent Scheme is a pilot program under the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa Program. It was launched on the 1^st of July 2018. Its launch was targeted to provide business in Australia especially startups a way to sponsor skilled talent. The scheme covered skilled specialized workers not covered by the TSS Subclass 482 Visa program.

The GTS was designed for employers to fill in positions that:

1. Cannot be filled by local Australian workers
2. Cannot be filled by other visa programs like the TSS visa.

Not all employers in Australia have access to the GTS. Employers in Australia are required to demonstrate the need to access the scheme. If the employer is successful in doing so, they need to get into an agreement with the Australian Govt. This needs to be done under the agreement stream of the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS). Only then would an employer be able to sponsor someone under the GTS.

What are the two GTS streams?

The 2 streams under GTS are:

1. Established business stream: This is for employers who are approved sponsors of Australia. It allows them to sponsor highly-skilled workers to contribute to innovation in the existing business. The cutting-edge skills of the workers help make these businesses and their workers the best at what they do.
2. Startup stream: This allows employers to hire foreign workers with new-wave skills to contribute to the developing startup environment in Australia. These workers bring new skills, new ideas, and new technology to Australia. This stream is for startups operating in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). To be eligible, startups should receive an endorsement from the independent Global Talent Scheme advisory panel.

What is the purpose of the Global Talent Scheme?

The GTS is primarily designed to benefit Australian and Australian workers, as per SBS.

It is to bring in highly-skilled, well-experience foreign workers to Australia. These talented workers can help create jobs in Australian businesses thereby helping more local staff to be hired. These highly-skilled workers also help in transferring the required skills and knowledge to Australians.
