The UK government has made an announcement that it will make 30,000 seasonal work visas available for 2021. This will enable EU and non-EU workers to come to the country and work to help pick and pack fruits and vegetables.
The UK Seasonal Worker visa program was first launched in 2019 as a pilot program. It has now been extended for another 12 months applicable for EU and non-EU workers from January 1, 2021. From January 1, 2020, the freedom of movement from the European mainland will end.
The new announcement in the UK immigration sphere is motivated by the concerns of farmers who are worried whether their crops will get destroyed without enough workers to pick and pack them to move them. The 2020 harvesting season has been a challenging one for them.
The UK government has raised the availability of the UK work visa for seasonal workers migrating to the country. The plans to actively recruit them and retain them in 2021 are also under implementation.
With the extension of the seasonal work visas, farms can now continue to hire foreign workers to work in the UK for up to 6 months. With the developments happening following this extension, the farm work will be done as needed and will provide the shoppers with fresh home grown produce.
