Ontario province government is investing CAN $ 100 M in 2023-24 to boost services that can help new immigrants to brush up their English or French language skills, as well as settle down, and find jobs. The province saw 162,000 immigrants coming in till September 2023.
To make this feasible for new immigrant job seekers, the province will be the 1st in Canada to introduce a legislation that will ban the use of Canadian work experience, allowing inclusion of provisions on Canadian experience in employment standards legislation.
A torch bearer, it was 1st province in Canada to ban the use of discriminatory Canadian work experience requirements under the Fair Access to Regulated Professions and Compulsory Trades Act, 2006.
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is the province’s immigration program, which works with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Under this program, it will nominate 16,500 in 2023.
Ontario is also proposing to improve oversight and accountability regarding how regulated professions such as architects, accountants, and geoscientists use 3rd-party organizations to assess international qualifications for fair assessment.
