Overseas students, graduates, and individuals on Bridging Visas are fueling the Australian immigration boom. The figures of Provisional Australia Visa holders have enhanced to 107,000 in June last year. This is an increase of 5% as per the latest revealed statistics, as quoted by the ABC Net Au.
The fresh Visa holders have eclipsed the Australia PR Visa cuts by the government in the same period. The numbers of Bridging Visas currently stand at 176,000. This is an increase of 40,000 over 2017. A senior Immigration Officer during the 2000s Abul Rizvi termed this as something with no precedent.
The Immigration Officer added that increase the number of Bridging Visas implies slower processing of Visas by the department.
The nation-wise break up of Bridging Visa holders in comparison with June 2017 has also been revealed. The Chinese nationals are leading with 10,000 extra visas followed by Indians with 7,000 extra visas. Malaysians are having the third highest Bridging Visas with 4,000 extra Visas.
Alan Tudge the Multicultural Affairs Minister declined to address the increase in Bridging Visas. He said that almost all the increase in Short-term Visas since assuming office has been overseas students. The vast majority of these are Tourists, Overseas Students, and New Zealanders said Tudge.
The economic contribution of overseas students in Australia has been highlighted by the study released by the London Economics. It has been commissioned by the Group of Eight Universities. This found that a net average tuition fee of 58,000 $ was paid by overseas students. They also contributed more than 50,000$ individually through rent and other living expenses.
