Prime Minister declares new task force to resolve immigration delays

Task force resolves immigration delays

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, has declared a new task force that has been created to resolve exceptional delays in the government services such as immigration application processing, airports, and passports.

A vast group of federal ministers has introduced the task force to identify significant gaps in these services and will also review the service delivery and make recommendations to improve these factors.

Specialized attention is given to processing the immigration applications by the task force in identifying essential aspects where the action is necessary. The aim is to create both long-term and short-term solutions to improve the speed and quality of the service and clear the backlog.

Trudeau said, “The service delays in the last few months have been unacceptable, and we will continue to do our best to improve the delivery of these services in a proficient and timely manner, as the task force will support in guiding the work of the government to meet the ever-changing needs of the Canadians and continuously provide them with high-quality services they deserve.”

Immigration backlog exceeds 2 million applicants in Canada

Currently, the immigration backlog in Canada stands at 2.4 million individuals.

The number of applicants between April 29 and June 1 increased by 257,499 and is continuing to rise as more people seek temporary residence.

According to June 1, 2022, there are 1,471,000 individuals in the application backlog for temporary residence, with an increase of 216,380 compared to data released on April 29.

However, it is considered that an increase in this type of visa application is not unusual because of the seasonal nature of programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), employing vast numbers of workers in the tourism and agricultural sectors.

The Express Entry backlog is positioned at just over 31,600 applicants, with a decrease of over 9000 applicants from the end of April through programs like:

As the Express Entry draws for the FSWP and FSTP have been on hold since December 2020 and CEC since September 2021, the IRCC has prioritized finalizing Express Entry applicants who already exist in the application pool to make way for the new candidates.

Sean Fraser, the immigration minister, has pledged the resumption of the Express Entry draws for all programs in early July, along with pre-pandemic processing times of six months.
